Have you ever noticed how people RP in MD? One person tries to dictate the action of both players.
As an example: “Fred punched George sending him crashing to the ground.”
True RPing allows both participants to act and react.
Example: “Fred punched AT George.”
That gives George the chance to dodge or get hit.
Some words that work for RPing are: aim, aspire, at, attack, attempt, bear down, chip away at, compete, contend, contest, do one's best, drive for, endeavor, essay, exert oneself, go after, go all out, go for, have a crack, have a go, have a shot, have a stab, have a whack, knock oneself out, labor, lift a finger, make a bid, make a pass at, make an attempt, make an effort, propose, put oneself out, risk, seek, shoot for, speculate, strive, struggle, tackle, try, undertake, venture, vie for, work, and wrangle. Granted some will work better than others.
Ok, you’ve thrown your punch, but where did you throw it? More information will enhance your action. Let’s go back to Fred’s punch.
“Fred punched at George.” Did he punch his face (jaw, eye, or cheek), gut, arm, groin, or wherever. Adding a location helps the other player know what’s going on.
“Fred punched at George’s jaw.” Now George knows where to defend if he wants.
Naming the type of punch adds even more detail. Punches like jab, hook, upper cut, and sucker are just a few. Kicks can also be named.
“Fred threw a right hook at George’s jaw.”
The verb in the action was changed to make the wording smoother. Telling which hand threw the punch helps your opponent know more about what’s happening.
Defense is the choice of the one the RP is being done. In this case George is on defense. This means George decides if the punch lands or not.
“Fred threw a right hook at George’s jaw.” “George dodged Fred’s punch.”
There’s nothing more annoying during an RP fight than an opponent that dodges everything. For George to dodge everything is nearly impossible. It can be more entertaining to get beat, too.
“Fred threw a right hook at George’s jaw.” “George staggers back as the punch connects.”
Action words that can work here are: careen, dither, falter, halt, hesitate, lurch, overlap, pitch, reel, shake, stagger, stammer, step, stumble, sway, swing, teeter, titubate, topple, totter, vacillate, waver, wheel, whiffle, wobble, zigzag to name a few. Again, some words will work better than others.
There are other things you can do to avoid an attack like rolling, flipping, and ducking. Use your imagination!
You could take the defense and turn it to offense, if your character is a well-trained fighter.
“Fred threw a right hook at George’s jaw.” “George catches Fred’s punch and flips him”
This actually takes much more detail. The above example is a raw example.
